Outdoor Research San Juan Jacket Review
The Outdoor Research San Juan Jacket is a breathable soft shell jacket with weather-shielding properties. This jacket is made of 75-denier polyester and offers plenty of stretches. I was impressed with its durability, even after a number of abrasive scrambles. Its DWR coating helped keep the jacket looking as good as new. I also like the breathable design and comfortable fit. The price of the jacket is quite reasonable for a soft shell.
Weather-shielding soft shell
The weather-shielding soft shell of the Outdoor Research San Juan Jacket was inspired by the dry snow of the Colorado Rockies. It is crafted to meet the needs of mountaineers while staying warm and dry. The jacket features a full-zip closure, long sleeves, and a high-quality, wind-resistant fabric. The San Juan shell is available in regular and short sizes, and the sleeves and inseam are measured in inches.
This jacket is lightweight and features several useful features. The hood is helmet compatible with three-way adjustment and a hood lock wire in the brim. It fits snugly over a big ski helmet without being bulky. There are six pockets on the jacket, including two drop-in pockets and two chest pockets. The jacket also boasts a slim and trim fit that makes it ideal for walking around town.
Another lightweight, low-cost softshell from Outdoor Research is the Ferrosi. It’s a lightweight softshell with a high-performance design that excels in high-output activities, such as skiing. It’s also abrasion-resistant and breathable. It’s ideal for winter sports and will keep you warm and dry in all kinds of conditions. This lightweight jacket also comes with an integrated powder skirt and dump pockets for storing equipment.
While softshell jackets aren’t completely waterproof, they are very comfortable. Most are made of smooth, woven nylon or polyester fabric. The interior is lined with brushed polyester or a fleece grid to add some extra warmth. Softshell jackets are not made to be impermeable to the elements, so you’ll be glad you choose a hardshell jacket for prolonged exposure to precipitation.
Besides the torso-height handwarmer pockets, a performance softshell should also include a chest pocket with zippered flaps. The latter is a convenient place to keep your goggles and skins. Another important feature of a softshell is its ability to double as an integrated stuff sack. If you’re looking for an all-purpose jacket, Black Diamond offers a few excellent options. Its lightweight, stretch-woven nylon material provides excellent ventilation and can be worn year-round.
Breathable fabric
The lightweight, breathable San Juan jacket from Outdoor Research is a great choice for ski touring. Its smooth-skinned polyester fabric repels light precipitation and allows for maximum airflow, making it an excellent choice for chilly conditions. This jacket also features an internal “Shove-It” pocket, which keeps your ski skins dry and clean. A helmet-compatible hood cinches to a snug fit.
The San Juan Jacket provides excellent breathability and comfort while protecting you from wind and water. Its 75-denier polyester fabric is durable and offers stretch to move with you. This durable jacket also comes with a DWR finish to prevent it from getting wet. This jacket is a little heavier than other softshells, so make sure it’s the right size. It’s also a bit less flexible than a softshell, but the breathable fabric is a big plus!
It also has great pockets for storage. Its full-length front zipper makes it easy to access them even when you’re wearing a harness. The jacket also features zippered hand pockets and chest pockets. Its trim fit makes it the perfect piece for layering over baselayers. However, you can also pair it with a hardshell if you need to. A few other useful features of the San Juan Jacket are described below.
The Outdoor Research San Juan Jacket also features a highly breathable and waterproof fabric. Its AscentShell fabric is an electrospun laminate, which features a 20-denier face fabric with a 12D polyester backer. It has a silver sheen and a fully taped interior, which promises to breathe well and repel 100% of external moisture. You’ll be protected and comfortable regardless of the weather, and it will keep you cool on chilly days.

It’s perfect for any activity that requires extreme warmth, and will not add extra weight.
Comfortable fit
The Outdoor Research San Juan Jacket has several features to keep you warm and comfortable while exploring the backcountry. Its light weight and slim fit don’t make you feel sluggish or restricted in the mountains. And it’s comfortable to wear under a layering system that includes a base layer and insulated down jacket. The jacket’s cut is versatile and accommodating to multiple layers and athletic movements.
The Outdoor Research San Juan is a fully-featured shell jacket that performs exceptionally well, even in temperatures near freezing. The breathable fabric allows air to circulate, and it feels robust enough to withstand exertion. This jacket also seems perfect for ski touring. The hood can be adjusted and has an internal shove-it stash pocket. The San Juan jacket is also designed with a slim and trim fit for enhanced mobility.
The jacket’s collar zipper cover is not comfortable and irritates the chin. Overall, this jacket is an excellent buy, and the price is affordable. If weight is an issue, you might want to buy a different style. The San Juan Jacket is also available in women’s versions. While the jacket fits comfortably, the vest is a bit smaller than usual. It fits snugly, but it doesn’t sag or ride poorly.
Despite being a hooded jacket, the San Juan is available in a vest and non-hooded option. Both women’s and men’s versions are available in a variety of colourways and weights. The men’s version is priced at $199 and weighs a lightweight 1 pound 0.9 ounces. The men’s version costs $199 and comes in a vest option.
